Hey, hey!  It's Day 7--One week down and only... (counts on fingers) three-and-a-half to go!

Today it's 1954's "Creature from the Black Lagoon", with the Gill Man in question wandering around and harrying the bathing suited female lead.  Don't wonder why a Gill Man would be attractive to a beautiful, scantily clad (well, for the 1950's) women.  Yeah, I didn't think of that until I was much, much older.  

Mostly, when I watched this as a kid, I was enthralled with the slow stalking swamp monster, trundling through the jungle and swimming below the surface.  He put the "Monster" in "Monster Movie".

Done with a limited palette of Titanium White and Payne's Gray.

STEP ONE:  Here is a quick outline done in Paynes Gray to suggest the general outline.  It is painted on an 8-1/2" x 11" extra thick cardstock which was primed with a 50/50 mix of gesso and matte medium.

STEP TWO:  And here's the first pass to model the form, as well as the lights and darks for the painting.

STEP THREE:  Here's the finished painting, done with lots and lots of layering and back-and-forth.

Done with Acrylic paint on 8-1/2" x 11" gessoed cardstock.

Day 09: The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Since I started a run with Universal Monsters, I figured I'd continue it 'til I got a The Creature from the Black Lagoon.  And here we are.

I started with just a ballpoint pen drawing, but began to think maybe I should throw some watercolor over top of it.  So, I used some casein fixative to keep the paper from warping too much and to give the watercolor a medium to "stick" to.  It turned out the ink wasn't all that waterproof, so that was an interesting effect (one I plan on using for a future picture).  I almost left it as the blurry mess of lines, as it looked kind of interesting, but threw some color over top.  After an initial flat color layer, I decided to use some gouache (opaque watercolor) over it--leaving the ballpoint pen as a sort of texture beneath the painting.

Inktober! Halloween Round-Up

Well, I suppose it makes more sense to show whatever was done with the Halloween-based, Pen-and-Ink drawings for Inktober without the colorized layers on top.  So, here they all are in their inky, black-and-white gory... er, glory.

All were done with pen-and-ink with a No. 8 brush on 8-1/2" x 11" cardstock.--although, the Mummy also used Copic .5mm marker, as well.

I almost forgot how much fun it is to work in straight up pen-and-ink.  I'm definitely gonna have to do this some more.  :-)

The Creature from the Black Lagoon, A.K.A. Gill-Man, was a creature I knew more about from pictures in various monster magazines and books then from the movie, itself.  It did eventually show up in one of the many Saturday Monster Matinees they would show on TV when I was growing up.  As I was a kid with a fixation and imagination bent toward anything with monsters, aliens, and robots, found it great, scary fun.  I haven't watched it recently, so I wonder how it holds up to a more modern viewing.

STEP ONE:  Here are the rough pencils on a 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of cardstock.

STEP TWO:  I inked the pencils with a a #8 brush and Pro-Art 4100 India Ink.

STEP THREE:  I scanned it into Photoshop and colorized the Creature with three values of green over a MULTIPLY Layer, but also added some more color to the lips, and blue background.  I added a couple simple bubbles just 'cuz it amused me.
