Day 28: Alien (1979) - 31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020

31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020
Alien (1979)

"Alien" is a great movie, the equivalent of a sci-fi haunted house in space with the Xenomorph jumping out and yelling "Boo!"  Oh, and killing people.

While trying to take a closer look at the Xenomorph, I noticed a lot more things on the costume that, while I knew they were there, it never really registered.  This time, I was looking and asking myself: "Is that a dryer vent?  That looks like a hex nut!  Etc."  All those inorganic items stuck to the costume.  Sure, H. R. Giger was into a biomechanical aesthetic, but didn't realize how literal it was in the Xenomorph in the original "Alien".  I guess I never looked closely enough at the original costume, but am used to the Xenomorphs from the later movies which, while it's still there, isn't quite as obvious.

If you will forgive the shameless self-promotion, I have to point out that among my most popular "Unwanted Valentine" by far is the Face-Hugger one, and turns up in some of the oddest places when Valentine's Day approaches.

STEP ONE:  Here are the quick pencils on 11" x 17" toned cardstock.

* * *

STEP TWO:  This was followed by the inks, done with a couple different brushes.  When I was about 3/4 of the way through, I started to regret just doing the Alien Xenomorph only in ink and wishing I had just done a watercolor/gouache.  Also, some of the proportions of the nick-knackery stuck to the costume wasn't quite right, but it was already inked and too late.  Sigh.

* * *

STEP THREE:  The brush and ink seemed a little bland compared to all the previous watercolor/gouache paintings, so I thought I'd import it into Procreate and work on colorizing it just a little bit.  Nothing too fancy, just some airbrush tools and such on a Multiply Layer.  I figured I haven't really used Procreate since the new update and would see if there was something new.  I also thought I'd go with something that looked vaguely like a black light poster, why not?

Day 08: Critters (1986) - 31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020

31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020
Critters (1986)

I watched "Critters (1986)" when I was a teen on VHS when it first came out--which makes me sound like a Hipster, rather than just really old.  I found it to be a fun movie, with little, people-eating space aliens on the run from space bounty hunters.  I re-watched it recently and it is still pretty amusing in a retro-80's-monster-movie-with-puppets kind of way.

* * *

STEP ONE:  Here are the pencils on 8-1/2" x 11" gray-toned cardstock, done with a black colored pencil.

* * *

STEP TWO:  This is the ink and brush.  I was half-tempted to just do up some highlights using a white colored pencil and leaving it at that, but since Critters are rather colorful characters, I decided to break out the watercolors...

* * *

STEP THREE:  Here is a first pass with gouache (opaque watercolor).

* * *

STEP FOUR:  And here are is the finished painting.  I painted with the gouache/watercolor first to model the forms first, then did an overlay with brush and ink to make sure the darks stay solid, rather than seeing the gouache wash out and overrun the ink.

Done traditionally with brush & ink and watercolor/gouache on 8-1/2" x 11" gray-toned cardstock.

Day 06: Beetlejuice (1988) - 31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020

 31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020
Beetlejuice (1988)

Hey, it's a drawing of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Bee...  One of the better Tim Burton movies, IMHO.  I must admit, I always thought it was a rather strange choice to be made into a Saturday morning cartoon.  Right up there with the "Tales from the Crypt" / "Tales from the Cryptkeeper" Saturday morning cartoon.

Alas, I gotta keep this one short as I'm running behind schedule already and gotta start on tomorrow's drawing as soon as I'm done posting this one.  Sigh...

* * *

STEP ONE:  Here are the pencils on 8-1/2" x 11" toned cardstock, done with an Indigo Blue colored pencil.

* * *

STEP TWO:  And here are the inks, done with a brush and Pro 4100 India Ink.

* * *

STEP THREE:  This is after a quick wash of watercolor/gouache over the inks.

* * *

STEP FOUR:  And here is the finished overlay of colored pencil over the watercolor.

Day 02: Nosferatu (1922) - 31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020

 31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2020:
Nosferatu (1922)

It's day two--so far, so good!  I can't do a "31 Days of HELL-O-Ween" and NOT include the 1922 "Nosferatu", Directed by F.W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok/Nosferatu.  Nosferatu is absolutely one of the creepiest depictions of a Vampire.

* * *

STEP ONE:  Here is the quick sketch done with ballpoint pen on 11" x 17" gray cardstock.

* * *

STEP TWO:  And here is the halfway point done with ink washes using watercolor brush.

* * *

STEP THREE:  And this is the finished ink wash painting, with highlights done with white Gouache (opaque watercolor).  Some of the warping and buckling on the bottom half of the painting scanned in as lighter gray, almost looking like a slight fog effect.  I'll pretend I did something intentional for that effect.

Day 25: Trick 'r Treat - 31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019

31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019
Day 25: Trick 'r Treat

This posting is a Pumpkinhead of a different sort (heh heh)--it's from Trick 'r Treat, a darkly fun, twisted movie with a series of interconnected vignettes about Halloween and the rules thereof.  Sort of like "Creepshow, but without the interstitial animations featuring The Creep.

This time around, I didn't bother scanning the pencils, as the cardstock was dark enough to make them difficult to see.  So, just a scan of the inks done with a #10 round brush and watercolor over top.

Day 24: Pumpkinhead - 31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019

31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019
Day 24: Pumpkinhead

This one is by special request from a pal of mine, Todd G.  So, heeeeeere's Pumpkinhead!  I liked the movie--it was a fun monster movie--and it was directed by special effects pioneer, Stan Winston.

This was done with pen and ink, then a little bit of watercolor/gouache for highlights and such on 8-1/2" x 11" toned cardstock.

Day 10: Invasion of the Saucer Men - 31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019

31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019
Day 10: Invasion of the Saucer Men

Hey, it's about one-third of the way through the self-imposed challenge and so far, so OK...  Although, I'm a little behind schedule, so let's see how that pans out.  Argh!

Anyways, as a kid, anything with monsters, aliens, or space ships and I was all in.  "Invasion of the Saucer Men" is one of the quintessential B-Movies that best sums up my dumb childhood (as is "Plan 9 From Outer Space")--and it TERRIFIED me as a kid.  Now, I'm terrified that I ever saw it as scary.  At the end of the movie, the aliens are killed when the blood alcohol of the town drunk is so high, they practically explode in a puff of smoke when car headlights are shined on them...  It's a long, dumb story--Just like my childhood!

Also, if you do an image search for Invasion of the Saucer Men, I do have to wonder if their ears are intentionally something straight out of YouPorn...  YIKES!  NC-17 for sure.

This was done with ballpoint pen on 9" x 12" marker paper--I didn't bother with pencils, etc.  I sprayed some casein fixative, which turned it into a bit of a blurry mess, but I wanted to use that to then use gouache over top.  Alas, this paper didn't smear the ink nearly as well as the Canson Mixed-Media did for "The Creature of the Black Lagoon" drawing, but I was able to still over-paint with gouache.

Day 09: The Creature from the Black Lagoon - 31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019

31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019
Day 09: The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Since I started a run with Universal Monsters, I figured I'd continue it 'til I got a The Creature from the Black Lagoon.  And here we are.

I started with just a ballpoint pen drawing, but began to think maybe I should throw some watercolor over top of it.  So, I used some casein fixative to keep the paper from warping too much and to give the watercolor a medium to "stick" to.  It turned out the ink wasn't all that waterproof, so that was an interesting effect (one I plan on using for a future picture).  I almost left it as the blurry mess of lines, as it looked kind of interesting, but threw some color over top.  After an initial flat color layer, I decided to use some gouache (opaque watercolor) over it--leaving the ballpoint pen as a sort of texture beneath the painting.

And here is the progression of the work in progress...

Day 07: The Wolfman - 31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019

31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019
Day 07: The Wolfman

Hey, it's one week in and so far I'm doing... OK with this dumb, self-imposed challenge.  I'm still flying by the seat of my pants, though.  Today, it's The Wolfman.

This drawing was done with brush and ink, along with white colored pencil and Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White for highlights on 8-1/2" x 11" toned cardstock.

Here are the pics as it was drawn...

Day 03: Frankenstein - 31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019

31 Days of HELL-o-Ween 2019
Day 03: Frankenstein

This time, it's Frankenstein.  And, yes, Frankenstein is the scientist; the monster is the pedant who points that out.  (An old joke I couldn't resist. ;-)

And here's the progression of the drawing, from the beginning to the finished image.  There weren't any pencils--I just started drawing with a ballpoint pen/gel pen, then used white gouache (Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White) for the highlights.  I'm no Jung Gi Kim, but I get by.

Inktober Halloween Round-Up - 2018

Inktober 2018

Here's the summary of Inktober for 2018.  I surely would have gotten a lot more done if I wasn't so busy digitally colorizing each of the pen-and-ink drawings--which surely defeats the intention of Inktober.  Oh, well.  I'm sure I'll be doing the same thing next year, too.  I've never been much of one to listen or follow directions.  Such an attitude has sure rocketed me to the current mediocrity I enjoy... Well, "mediocrity" is surely an overstatement.

* * *

All were done using a #10 brush and Pro Art Pro-4100 ink on 8-1/2" x 11" cardstock (with a minor assist with a .5mm black gel pen on a few of the drawings and ruling the borders).
