31 Days of HELL-O-Ween 2023:
The Ritual (2017)
Hey, hey--It's a newer movie this time, the 2017 "The Ritual". It involves a band of friends who go on a nature hike and are met with one disastrous situation after another and every fork in the road they take (literal and metaphorical) is the wrong one, ending with a meeting with a Jötunn, an offspring of Loki worshipped by a cult.
While I generally liked the movie, when the Jötunn made it's appearance I will admit that I was trying to process the monster and figure out what I was looking at--the anatomy was all wrong and it looked like a hodge-podge of random objects duct taped together. A jawbone here, a couple arms there... is that a torso for its head? It is one of the more unique, creepy monster designs I have seen in a while.
This was done with Acrylic Paint and a limited palette of: Paynes Gray, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, and Cadmium Red Deep.

STEP ONE: Here is a quick breakdown done in Paynes Gray and Titanium White to suggest the general layout on the page. It is painted on an 8-1/2" x 11" extra thick cardstock which was primed with a 50/50 mix of gesso and matte medium.

STEP TWO: And here's the first pass with a thin layer of various colors to just try to get paint on the page.

STEP THREE: It's the finished painting done with lots and lots and lots of back-and-forth and thinly painted layers.
